The Evolution of Technology

Technology has evolved rapidly over the last 150 years and now intertwines itself in our daily lives. Imagine living in 1879 and lighting up a gas lamp in your house as nightfall sets in. Little did you know that down the street, Thomas Edison was busy inventing the light bulb. Imagine someone telling you then that in the future, humans would communicate with each other in real-time. Humans would eliminate diseases. Humans would stream entertainment and music around the world. Humans would live in space and travel to the moon.
Hard to imagine then, but this is reality today.

Now imagine someone telling you that 50 years from today, technology will surpass human intelligence. Technology will eliminate cancer. Technology will allow us to travel to Mars. Technology will connect all systems together. Technology will fundamentally change all aspects of our lives. Hard to imagine today, but this isn’t far-fetched.

Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of this technology revolution, which you most likely utilize in your daily life. Consider the following examples:

  • You type some words in the Google search bar, and it suggests what you are looking for (Google AutoComplete, predictive search)
  • You casually engage your digital assistant, to help you with daily tasks (Siri, Amazon Alexa)
  • You listen to music recommended by Spotify or a movie recommended by Netflix (personalized recommendations)

When asked if the world has any idea of what is coming with artificial intelligence, Kai-Fu Lee, a foremost AI expert, remarked:

“I believe it’s going to change the world more than anything in the history of mankind. More than electricity.”
