The world of education includes a dizzying array of data sources, systems, vendors and platforms, which often leaves educators  and school administrators struggling to connect these data systems in order to make meaningful use of these various data systems. The Ed-Fi Alliance is a nonprofit which provides states and local education agencies with a framework to solve this challenge. The Ed-Fi Data Standard allows for the seamless and secure exchange of data across multiple platforms, also known as data interoperability. The ability to bring multiple source systems of data together empowers educators with real-time, comprehensive insights into students’ performance and needs. With data privacy an ever-growing concern, the Ed-Fi Alliance wanted additional thought leadership and research into student data privacy. Understanding the market drivers and needs would help Ed-Fi Alliance prioritize the rollout of coming solutions.

Over a six-week engagement, Sense Corp consultants met with 20 different stakeholders, including school district CTOs, CIOs, administrators, industry subject-matter experts, and more. The team first conducted a current-state analysis of the student data privacy market, data privacy legislative policy review, and an assessment of key competitors. Then, they designed and presented three future-state vignettes, allowing stakeholders to select the strategic approach that the tactical roadmap would address. Ultimately, the final choice and feedback were used to design an actionable roadmap to guide the organization’s strategy going forward.

Through documentation and client presentations, the Sense Corp team provided the Ed-Fi Alliance with a roadmap to gradually roll out privacy features across a two-year time frame specifically addressing the current market and direction the market is trending. Armed with this information, Ed-Fi can now concentrate its efforts on a sustainable course of action that meets its constituents’ needs without overtaxing resources.
